I Am A C5-C6 Incomplete Quadriplegic Male & I Wore A Catheter Up My Urethra Into My Bladder For About 2 Years & A Half Until With The Help Of My Doctor We Decided It Would Be Best That I Take The Catheter Out Of My Penis Which Causes A Lot More Infections & Have A Procedure To Put In A Super Pubic Catheter

Below I've Written A Short Story Of What Could Possibly Be Expected After You Have The Surgery For A Super Pubic Catheter, I Also Want To Point Out That What I've Written Here Might Sound Discouraging But After The Recovery Period I've Realized That This Is One Of The Best Choices I've Made With My Body. This Way At Least You'll Have An Idea Of What To Expect

On September 17, 2009 I Was Set To Go In To The Hospital To Do The Procedure For My Super Pubic Catheter. I Was Told By My Urologist That This Was Minor Surgery And After 3 Months Of Having My New Super Pubic Catheter Am Thinking, Minor Surgery For Who, Because It Wasn't So Minor For Me. I Was Scheduled For Surgery At 12PM & Was Back Home By 6:30PM That Same Afternoon But Thats When I Started Having Some Complications. When I Got Home I Was Trembling Uncontrollably Because Of The Reaction My Body Was Having To The Anesthesia & Other Drugs I Was Given In The Hospital Right Before Surgery. Later That Night I Got An Extremely High Fever. I Woke Up The Next Morning & My Mouth Was Full Of Heat Blisters From How Much My Body Temperature Had Risen The Night Before. I Had High Fever For About 2 Days. Now Keep In Mind That They Call This Minor Surgery But That Doesn't Mean That The Next Day Your Going To Be Good To Go, It'll Probably Be About One Week Before Your Body Feels Good Again & You Recover Your Strength & Energy. The Week After Surgery It Felt Like I Had The Flu, I Felt Weak & My Bones & Muscles Hurt. On About The 2nd Or 3rd Day After My Surgery I Started Getting Autonomic Dysreflexia (Hyperreflexia). Now People With Spinal Cord Injuries Know Exactly What Am Talking About But For Everyone Else Who Doesn't Click On The Words Above To Learn More About It. My Body Was Basically Having Reactions To The Surgery & Since Am Paralyzed & I Can't Feel Pain Below My Chest Line My Body Reacts To Pain Differently. It Reacts By Causing Me To Sweat Uncontrollably, Whether Am Inside Or Outside, Physically Active Or Lying In Bed Getting Ready To Go To Sleep, And It Causes My Blood Pressure To Go Up As Well. Well At First The Sweats Started Light But After A Few Days They Got More & More Heavy. It Got So Bad That I Was Sleeping With A Table Fan Right In Front Of My Face & A Towel Behind My Head To Absorb All My Sweat. The Sweats & High B.P. Lasted For A Month, A Couple Of Days After My Doctor Took Out My Staples. My Body Had Been Feeling Some Kind Of Discomfort Or Pain Because Of The Staples That Were Put In Place For My Incision To Heal. You Can See From My Pictures That My Doctor Had Tied A Wire Around The Catheter & Held It At The Other End With One Of My Staples So That My Catheter For What Ever Reason Couldn't Be Pulled Out But Because It Was Tied To A Staple If My Catheter Was Moved Too Much Or Placed Incorrectly It Would Pull On the Staple. After A Couple Of Days Of This Happening The Staple Started Coming Off But Not In A Good Way Because It Was Tearing Off So It Was Ripping Skin & My Incision Wasn't Healing Properly. After A Month Of My Surgery Was When The Doctor Finally Removed My Staples. On That Day He Also Removed The Catheter From My Penis So It Was Going To Be My New Super Pubic Catheter Draining My Bladder Now & He Also Warned Me That I Might Leak From My Penis For A Few Days. When I Got Home From The Doctor That Morning I Looked At Myself & I Was All Wet, I Had Pee'd Myself But It Wasn't Coming From My Penis, It Was Coming From My Pubic Catheter. So To Make A Long Story Short I Drained From My Penis For A Couple Of Days & For About A Week & A Half I Drained From My Super Pubic Catheter Because The Incision Around The Catheter Wasn't Completely Healed Yet. The Whole Time I Had Leaked I Would Wear Little Towels In My Pants So If I Would Leak It Would Absorb It & I Also Cut Down On Drinking Fluids For That Time. One Very Important Thing To Know About All This Is That Your Area With The Incision & The Super Pubic Catheter Need To Be Cleaned At Least Once A Day With Disinfectants & Bandaged Up Until Finally The Incisions Heal. Its Important To Keep It Clean To Avoid Any Infections.
(You Will Always Discharge From The Area So Even After Its Completely Healed It Still Needs To Be Cleaned Every Day)
